Seafarers Resources: Providence

Providence, Rhode Island, has a small construction trailer with the NESM Seafarer's Center, and the chaplain there is an Episcopal (Anglican Communion) Priest by the name of Fr. Ashley Peckham. Fr. Peckham has phone cards and local information which you can trust, and from time to time, he also has inexpensive used bicycles. He is your best resource in the Port of Providence.

To reach the nice downtown area, turn right outside of the port and walk for about 30 minutes. You'll be safe during the day, but at night the neighborhood gets a little rough. We suggest taking a cab after dark.

Providence Place Mall has nice shopping, but it is not a discount mall. Some seafarers will group together and take a cab to the Emerald Square Mall, about 30 minutes north, in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

If you're looking for a place to sit, relax, and have a nice meal at a reasonable cost, then one of our staff suggests The Trinity Brew House, at the corner of Empire and Fountain Streets, right by the Dunkin Donuts Center (the civic arena for Providence). If Brandon is on duty, then you're being served by a fellow seafarer. Brandon has gone to sea as a commercial fisherman for much of his adult life. If you sit at a table, ask to be served by Karleen, Noelle, or Nikki. Tell them that "The Preacher" sent you.

Seafarers are always invited to Protestant Christian worship at 1st Universalist Church on Washington and Greene Streets, near the Public Library. Sunday worship is at 10:30am, Wednesday night worship (except in summer) is at 6pm, followed by a Bible study. The pastor and members at 1st Universalist will be very excited to welcome you to their fellowship and will want to hear about your ship and work.
